HAM vs GMRS — Why Go Deeper

GMRS is the right first radio for most families: no exam, $35 covers the whole household, and 5 watts with a local repeater covers neighborhood-to-county scale. We recommend it as your baseline in our Emergency Communications Guide. HAM is the upgrade path: more bands, more repeaters, more capability, and a formal role in your community’s emergency response. If you already have GMRS set up and want to go deeper — or if you want to participate in organized emergency communications rather than just own radios — HAM is the next step.

The trade-off is real. HAM requires a 35-question FCC exam, ongoing engagement to stay sharp, and a willingness to learn operating procedures. You can’t just buy a radio and use it the way you can a GMRS. But for preppers who want to be useful during a region-wide event — a hurricane, a wildfire season, an extended grid-down — the upside is significant: longer range, more repeaters, formal ARES/RACES participation, and (with a General upgrade) long-distance HF communication via skywave propagation.

Three License Tiers: Technician / General / Extra

The FCC structures amateur radio in three progressive license classes. Each adds privileges on more bands, and each requires passing an exam drawn from a published question pool. You stop at whichever tier fits your goals — most preppers never need General or Extra.

Technician

35-question exam. Grants full privileges on the 2m (144 MHz) and 70cm (440 MHz) bands — where virtually every local repeater, ARES net, and SKYWARN traffic operates. Also gives you limited HF privileges on 10m. This is where 95% of preppers stop — it is enough for full local emcomm participation.

Mid

General

Another 35-question exam. Unlocks most HF bands: 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, and additional 10m privileges. HF lets you talk across the country and to other continents via skywave propagation. Worth it if you want long-distance communication during a regional grid-down or wilderness evacuation.

Advanced

Extra

Another 50-question exam. Grants full HF privileges including the Extra-only slices of 80m, 40m, and 20m phone segments — valuable in a contest but rarely needed for emergency communication. Most operators never pursue this unless they want to be a Volunteer Examiner or run a contest station.

Pre-pper recommendation

Get your Technician. Spend six months using local repeaters and participating in an ARES net or two. If you find you want long-distance capability, upgrade to General. Skip Extra unless you have a specific reason.

The Baofeng UV-5R — A Starter HT at $30

The Baofeng UV-5R is the cheapest way to get on amateur radio. Under $30 from most online retailers, dual-band 144/440 MHz, 5W max output, fully programmable via the CHIRP software ecosystem. It is not a polished radio — the menu system is dated, the receiver is narrow — but it is more than enough for local repeater work and learning the hobby. If you outgrow it (most operators do within a year), the parts ecosystem is healthy and resale value holds.

Verdict

The UV-5R is the lowest-friction way to find out whether amateur radio is for you. Buy one, program your local repeaters via CHIRP, check in to a weekly ARES net, and decide. If you stick with the hobby, upgrade to a Yaesu FT-60R once you know what features you actually use. The UV-5R remains useful as a backup radio in every go-bag.

Antenna Upgrades — Where Real Range Comes From

The single biggest range improvement on any handheld is the antenna. The little rubber duck that ships with the Baofeng UV-5R is short for portability — it loses a meaningful fraction of your effective output on transmit and is deaf on receive. A $20 antenna swap routinely doubles real-world suburban range. Compare the three common choices below. Field tip

The longer antenna is more noticeable but flexible enough to fold against your body when not transmitting. There is no substitute for a proper external antenna on a roll-up J-pole or mobile mag-mount once you reach the limits of HT range — but for handheld work, the NA-771 closes most of the gap to a much more expensive radio.

ARES and RACES — Joining the Emergency Net

The two formal volunteer emergency communication programs in amateur radio are ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service). Both feed into the same operational network, and ARES is the path most operators take to get involved.

🌊 ARES — ARRL Auxiliary Communications Service

A volunteer program run by the ARRL. ARES members register with a local Emergency Coordinator (EC), train on NTS message formatting, and participate in weekly or monthly nets to stay current. During a declared emergency, ARES operators relay health-and-welfare traffic, pass message traffic off the overloaded cell network, and provide ground-truth weather observations for the National Weather Service via SKYWARN. 🏰 RACES — FCC-Licensed Emergency Service

An FCC-licensed emergency service activated by a state emergency-management request during a declared emergency. RACES operators have formal authority to transmit during emergencies when amateur operations are otherwise restricted. Registration is through your state emergency management office — usually a short application after you hold a Technician license and have some ARES training. Once registered, you are part of an organized, recognized emergency resource.

Why bother

The radios and license are not the hard part. The hard part is knowing what to do when there is actual traffic to pass. ARES teaches you NTS message formatting, net procedure, and partnered work with served agencies (Red Cross, county EM, hospitals). The training time is small (a few hours per year) and the value during a real event is enormous. Preppers who join ARES move from “owns a radio” to “useful during a real event” in a single season.

Programming Your Radio with CHIRP

Handheld programming via the front-panel menu is painful on every radio ever made. CHIRP (free, open-source) lets you program frequencies, offsets, CTCSS tones, and channel names from a laptop in a spreadsheet-style interface. The workflow is the same on Baofeng, Yaesu, Wouxun, and most other HTs — buy one programming cable, use it forever.

Download CHIRP free from chirp.danplanet.com. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. No account, no telemetry, just a Python app that talks to your radio over a USB programming cable.

Build your channel list

Add columns for Frequency, Offset, Tone Mode, Tone Frequency, and Name. Import a RepeaterBook CSV for your area or type in your local repeater’s input/output by hand. Save as a .csv so you can re-import after a battery change or reset.

Flash your radios

Connect the programming cable, radio off, click Upload from Radio to back up the stock image first, then click Upload to Radio with your programmed list. Verify with a test transmission on a local repeater. Keep the backup .img file on a USB stick in your go-bag.

Once your license issues, print the FCC license PDF on card stock, laminate it, and keep a copy in every go-bag. Net control operators and ARES leadership will ask for your callsign on every transmission — a laminated card prevents mistakes under stress. Pair the callsign with a laminated frequency sheet listing your primary repeater, secondary repeater, simplex calling frequency, and the local SKYWARN net frequency.
