Why Repeaters Matter

A pair of 5-watt GMRS handhelds on simplex typically reaches 1–3 miles in suburban terrain — closer to 5 miles on open water or flat farmland, but rarely more between houses. That is fine for next-door or one-block comms, but it falls short when you want to coordinate a school pickup across town, talk to a family member 15 miles away, or stay in touch with a neighborhood group during a sustained outage. A repeater solves exactly that problem.

A repeater is two radios connected to a tall antenna: one listens for incoming handhelds, the other re-broadcasts the audio at high power from hundreds of feet up. With the FCC's standard +5 MHz offset on GMRS channels 15–22 (your handheld transmits 5 MHz higher than it receives), one well-sited repeater on a tall building, ridge, or water tower can cover 25–50+ miles line-of-sight. The trade-off is that the repeater is owned and operated by a third party, and you need to know which channel and tone to use — or, for closed repeaters, get a private access code from the owner.

Three online tools catalog GMRS repeaters. They overlap in coverage but differ on cost, interface, and update cadence. Most prepper households use MyGMRS as the primary lookup and add one of the others only if a specific need appears.

  • Limitations: CTCSS tone field is sometimes empty; UI is denser and less GMRS-focused than MyGMRS.

Simplex vs Repeater Offsets

A quick recap, since simplex vs repeater terminology carries through every step below. Simplex is one frequency used for both transmit and receive: radio-to-radio, no middleman. A repeater is two frequencies: your radio transmits on the input (5 MHz higher than the channel displays), the repeater re-broadcasts on the output (the displayed channel). This split is what lets a single repeater cover 25+ miles while two handhelds on simplex cover 1–3.

Both parties are inside radio range of each other (typically 1–3 miles suburban, 5 miles line-of-sight). Simplex uses any GMRS channel 1–22 with no offset, no CTCSS tone required for an open conversation, and no access code. Simplex is the always-free default. Every prepper-family channel plan starts with a primary simplex channel (most families pick 16 or 18) and only programs a repeater as a secondary option.

One or more parties are outside simplex range — spread across a metro area, separated by hills or dense urban blocks, or coordinating a school pickup 15–25 miles from home. How to Scan for Local Activity

A directory tells you which repeaters exist on paper. Scanning tells you which repeaters are actually busy in your area — a far more useful answer for picking a primary. The four-step walkthrough:

Set your radio to scan channels 15–22

Channels 15–22 are the eight repeater-capable GMRS-only channels. Program all eight memory slots at 462.5500 / 462.5750 / 462.6000 / 462.6250 / 462.6500 / 462.6750 / 462.7000 / 462.7250 MHz, Duplex set to +, and Tone Mode set to None (so the squelch opens on any incoming signal). Most Baofeng and Midland handhelds scan the eight slots in roughly 1–2 seconds per cycle.

Use dual-watch or scan mode

On a Baofeng BF-F8HP, hold the SCAN key on the side of the radio to start scanning. On a Midland GXT1000, press the SCAN button on the front face. Dual-watch mode (available on most GMRS handhelds) keeps the radio hopping between two priority channels while idle — a useful variant for normal everyday use once you have picked a primary repeater.

Monitor for 20–30 minutes during peak time

Evening rush hour (5–7pm) and weekend mornings are the busiest GMRS windows in most metro areas. Sit in scan mode during one of these windows with the radio near a window or outside. Log every channel where you catch a live conversation, plus the callsign of any operator and the time. Two or three hits across eight channels is normal; ten hits across two channels means you have hit a busy open repeater.

Log the live repeaters

Cross-reference your live-repeater log against the MyGMRS.com listing for your ZIP code. The live ones you just heard should appear in the directory under their listed channel and tone — if the directory says 'Private' or 'Closed' but you heard traffic, the owner has not updated the listing. The logged live channels are your shortlist for next-step programming.

For radios already programmed with CHIRP (covered in How to Program a GMRS Radio), use the Live Monitor feature on each of the eight repeater-capable channels. CHIRP's Live Monitor listens passively on a chosen frequency without transmitting — the right tool for scanning work where you want to hear traffic without broadcasting your callsign on every channel in turn.

GMRS Repeater Access Codes (CTCSS)

A CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) tone is a sub-audible analog tone between 67.0 and 254.1 Hz transmitted under your voice. The repeater listens for the tone and only re-broadcasts your signal when your tone matches the configured code. Two flavors exist:

The repeater owner publishes a tone (commonly 100.0 Hz, 141.3 Hz, or 156.7 Hz in the U.S.) and anyone can use the repeater after programming the tone into their radio. MyGMRS listings for open repeaters show the tone in the 'Tone' column. No code request required — just program and transmit. Open repeaters are the right starting point for any family that wants repeater coverage.

🔒 Closed Repeaters

The owner keeps the tone private and assigns each authorized user a code. Closed repeaters exist because owners want to limit traffic to a known group (a neighborhood watch, a search-and-rescue team, a club), keep casual users from tying up the machine, or avoid coordinating with operators who do not share their operating habits. Closed repeater listings on MyGMRS typically show 'Private' in the tone column and a contact method for the owner.

How to read the Tone column on MyGMRS: an empty or 'None' value is rare in practice but means no tone required. A value like 100.0 or 141.3 is the CTCSS tone in hertz — enter that exact number in CHIRP's Tone Mode column. A value like D023N is a DCS digital code — less common on GMRS but the same idea.

For closed repeaters, the process for getting a private code is straightforward:

  1. Find the listing on MyGMRS. Look for a contact form, email address, or 2-meter amateur calling frequency the owner monitors.
  2. Send a polite note including your callsign, your general location, and why you want access (family emergency prep is a common reason and rarely refused).
  3. Wait for the owner to reply with a private code. Most owners reply same-day to within a week.
  4. Program the private code into your radio. The repeater is now on the air for you.
Do not transmit on a closed repeater until the owner replies with code. Unrequested access is the fastest way to lose reciprocity on a closed machine. If the owner does not respond inside two weeks, move on — there are usually multiple repeaters within line-of-sight of any metro-area home.
